Let the larger and smaller numbers be X and 3X/5 respectively.
Then, X - 3X/5 = 16
or, (5X - 3X)/5 = 16
or, 2X = 80
or, X = 40
So, the smaller number, 3X/5 = 3×40/5 = 24
